Rachel says: “Be passionate about the people, both residents and your colleagues. It’s how we do things round here”

How does a normal day start?

At around 7am, I get a coffee from my husband and reflect on the day ahead. We have integrated Microsoft teams to our personal devices, so I can check my calendar and answer some emails. I get my daughter dressed and then go to my home office if I’m working remotely, or travel into Sandwell to collaborate with colleagues in person.

Why did you join Sandwell Council?

I transferred from the NHS with the public health team originally which was great to be part of managing the team and help integrate into the Council. Since then, I’ve moved around Directorates taking advantage of secondments and have always been given the opportunity to develop myself with funded courses such as the Leadership Coaching qualification I am currently working towards.

Over my nearly 11 years’ service, I’ve had the pleasure of working with some really experienced colleagues and am learning all the time but have also worked alongside university graduates and apprentices which is rewarding to watch as they advance and grow.

What is your role?

I’m a Programme Manager in the Place executive directorate. I work across the council, pulling on my networks to get property asset projects over the line.  I also wear a consultant hat, inputting heavily into corporate operational processes and offering feedback through our employee Champions programmes, helping first-hand to develop the councils new operating principles, values and behaviours.

What do you do in your role?

Lots of things!!! Because I’ve got lots of project management and PA experience, I can often be found chairing meetings and writing project and programme plans. Some days I’ll present updates to our Leadership team to get feedback and other days I could be clearing rooms out ready for a move. I’m happy to get stuck in to get a job done and that’s an important trait for anyone who wants to work for Sandwell.

What’s been your most memorable moment so far?

Probably being the Programme Manager for a £12million pound refurbishment of our main civic centre. We were able to accelerate the works during COVID and really had the time to engage with employees to shape how the building should run to make it the best offer for them. I feel great pride when I see colleagues enjoying the place they work in and being more productive thanks to the spaces I helped create.

What would you be doing if you didn’t work here?

Having worked in both public and private sector, I can say categorically that I see the difference I’m making for residents. That’s empowering, so if not another local authority, probably the NHS.

What advice would you give someone considering a career with Sandwell Council? We have some incredibly talented people, striving to improve outcomes for our residents. If you want to come and work with us, be passionate about the people, both residents and your colleagues. It’s how we do things round here.
