Fly-tipping enforcement
You will be issued with a £1000 (reduced by 50% if paid within 10 days) fixed penalty notice if you are caught fly-tipping.
We use CCTV and reports from the public to help identify the perpetrators of fly-tipping incidents.
The dumping of controlled waste is a serious criminal offence which carries imprisonment for up to 6 months, an unlimited fine or both if the case is heard within the magistrates court. If found guilty by the Crown Court, 5 years imprisonment, an unlimited fine or both may be imposed. Those found guilty of fly tipping may also have to pay legal costs and compensation, which can greatly increase the financial implications of illegal dumping.
It is also an offence to permit (or allow) fly-tipping.
Fly-tipping is often associated with dumping waste from vehicles. The person in charge of the vehicle can also be prosecuted, which means it is possible for a prosecution to happen when only the vehicle, not the driver, can be identified. The police also have powers to seize vehicles used for fly-tipping.
