Equality Act
Our new Equality Objective has been developed in line with the guidance provided by the Equality Act 2010, this Act creates a legal requirement for the council to outline how we will work towards:
- Eliminating unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Act
- Advancing the equality of opportunity between those who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
- Fostering good relations between those who share a protected characteristic and those who do not (this includes tackling prejudice and promoting understanding)
The protected characteristics identified in the Equality Act 2010 are:
- age
- disability
- gender reassignment
- pregnancy and maternity
- race
- religion or belief
- sex
- sexual orientation
- marriage and/or civil partnership
