Why do I need to register?
In the UK there have been a number of outbreaks of Legionnaires’ Disease associated with wet cooling systems (cooling towers and evaporative condensers or wet air conditioning units). Community and workplace exposure to Legionella bacteria has the potential to cause serious infection and can sometimes be fatal. Outbreaks can give rise to considerable public concern.
Do I need to register?
The Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992 requires companies where cooling towers or evaporative condensers are situated to notify the local authority.
What legislation applies?
Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992
Under these regulations all companies need to provide to their local authority:
- details of where the notifiable plant is located;
- the person in control of those premises;
- the number of devices at the premises;
- and their approximate location.
The purpose of registration is to allow enforcing authorities to identify where potential sources of risk are located.
