There are limits on the number of Temporary Events Notices (TENs) an individual may give, and limits on the number that may be given for any one premises in a year.

If the sale of alcohol is included in either type of temporary event notice then all such supplies must be made by or under the authority of the person who has given the notification.

Premises for the purpose of TENS can mean anywhere, including for example parks and private land. A TEN can relate to the whole or part of a premises.

There are two types of TEN both of which are subject to strict deadlines which if not met mean the notification will not be accepted, the notice will be returned as void and the activities described in it will not be authorised. Note that all times are working days, not days, so allow for weekends and public holidays when submitting the notice.  The payment of the fee for the notice is part of the application process and any late payment will mean the date on which the TEN is given is the date of the payment

A standard TEN

A Standard TEN must be received by the Licensing Authority no less than ten clear working days before the event. If there is an objection by the Police or Environmental Health the application can be considered by the Licensing Committee and the application may be refused or permitted, but the committee can apply conditions in certain circumstances if the notice is permitted.

A late TEN

A late TEN can be served between 9 and 5 clear working days before the event but in the event of an objection by the Police or Environmental Health the event cannot be authorised and the event cannot take place. A notice, called a counter notice, will be issued stating that.
