People in Sandwell are being invited to come together and celebrate His Majesty, the King’s Coronation at a special free event at Sandwell Valley on Sunday, 7 May from 4pm until late.

As Big Lunches are held across the country, the Mayor of Sandwell will be hosting his very own Big Picnic Lunch, getting under way at 4pm.

Those coming along to enjoy the celebrations are invited to bring their own sandwiches, snacks and drinks.

There’ll also be an opportunity to sample a wide range of foods to suit all tastes from Caribbean, Punjabi, Korean, Mexican, American BBQ, cookie dough and wood-fired pizza, along with picnic boxes and prosecco hampers. A licensed bar will also be available.

From 5pm, in the run up to a live screening of the King’s Coronation Concert, there will be a fantastic evening of live entertainment from local talent.

These include platinum disc-holding Bhangra Band Apna Sangeet, soul and Motown singer Helen James, much-loved Wednesbury singer Beverley, the fabulous Dynamics Harmony Choir from Brandhall, and exciting performances from Theatre Kidz Rowley and Smile Musical Youth Theatre.

There will also be children’s craft activities plus a range of community stalls and local vendors selling goods from sweets and jams to wax melts and crystals.

Shokat Lal, Sandwell Council Chief Executive, said: “This will be a historic weekend as the nation and Commonwealth celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for people in Sandwell to come together, at our Big Picnic Lunch and live screening of the Coronation Concert at Sandwell Valley on Sunday 7 May and at street parties, street meets and local events organised by the community over the Coronation weekend. It is an opportunity to celebrate a historic moment within our local communities and be proud of everything that binds us.”

And if that wasn’t enough! For those with energy left to spare the day after, Monday 8 May, Sandwell Council is supporting The Big Help Out.

In tribute to the King’s public service, The Big Help Out is encouraging everyone to have a go at volunteering in their local area. Opportunities to volunteer in Sandwell can be found at the let’s go website
