Preparatory works for a major regeneration project which will see West Bromwich’s much-loved Town Hall and Central Library buildings restored internally and externally is well underway.
Scaffolding has been erected at both Grade II listed buildings to allow preliminary works, surveys and additional investigations to take place during the summer to determine the complete package of restoration works required within the agreed budget.
Central Library will continue to remain open for the duration of the restoration works.
The significant restoration and renovation project is being made possible by funding from the Government’s Towns Fund programme.
Among the external improvements to be carried out will be a new fully accessible entrance from West Bromwich High Street.
During the last 12 months, work from the ‘accelerated’ funding element of the scheme has seen major refurbishment works completed on the main Tower at the Town Hall building.
The main restoration programme for what will be known as the Town Hall Quarter is planned to start in September 2023 and is one of six West Bromwich Towns Fund projects.
Councillor Peter Hughes, Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said:
“It’s great news that we’re one step closer to this major renovation project starting in earnest.
“I’m really looking forward to the restoration and renovation of these much-loved and iconic West Bromwich landmarks, which have played such a large part in peoples’ lives since they were built.
“Although it’s important to see their historic significance preserved, we also need to look to the future and provide modern and vibrant facilities relevant for today’s users and for future generations.”
Due for completion in 2024, the buildings will benefit local people, community groups and third sector organisations.
Subject to the impact of construction cost inflation, it is intended that the regeneration project will have delivered:
- six temporary full-time jobs throughout the refurbishment project;
- two heritage buildings restored;
- the introduction of new and improved training and educational opportunities assisting 500 learners;
- 4,120 square metres of refurbished existing floor space;
- new performance, events and exhibition spaces.
Designed in the Italian Gothic style West Bromwich Town Hall was completed in 1895; whilst in 1907 West Bromwich Central Library was built as a gift to the borough from the industrialist and philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie.
Sandwell Council and its partners have successfully secured £67.5 million from the Towns Fund programme for 16 projects across three towns: five in Rowley Regis, five in Smethwick and six in West Bromwich.
