The week also helped publicise Sandwell Council’s commitment to promoting licensing regulation and engagement with businesses.

During the campaign week the team visited 13 licenced premises and provided advice and guidance.  The team held two drop-in sessions at Sandwell Council House.

A multi-agency visit took place with Trading Standards, West Midlands Police along with Pippa, the tobacco sniffer dog, to a licensed premise where a small quantity of illegal tobacco hidden in a secret concealment was found. Taxi Licensing carried out a multi-agency operation with West Midlands Police focused on road safety. A vehicle was reported by the police for dangerous vehicle condition/load, and a driver was given a Fixed Penalty Notice for not wearing his seatbelt.

The team also conducted late night refreshment visits, officers advised owners of three take aways that they required a Late Night Refreshment Licence, should they wish to sell hot food or drink between the hours of 11pm and 5am.

Councillor Syeda Khatun, Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Communities said:

“Licensing is there to keep everyone safe and well. So whether you enjoy a night out at a pub, a late night snack or a taxi home licensing can impact on you. National Licensing Week is an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of our licensing teams.”
