The latest inspection carried out by Ofsted on Sandwell Adult and Family Learning Service (SAFL) has resulted in the service being given a ‘Good’ rating in all areas.
The service - which is Sandwell Council’s adult education provider - retained its ‘Good’ rating, impressing Ofsted inspectors when they visited at the end of March.
The report praised staff and management throughout, stating: “Tutors are well organised and plan very effectively to engage learners in a good range of practical and interesting activities that encourage group and individual learning. Learners benefit from being in a supportive environment where they feel safe and gain confidence to reach their potential.”
Learners were also give praise throughout the report, stating: “Most learners overcome significant personal issues, developing confidence and self-worth because of their learning. They value what they learn to help them improve their health and well-being, reduce social isolation and move on to further learning and/or employment.”
Around 1,500 learners choose to learn with Sandwell Adult Family Learning each year and take part in a wide range of courses in English, Maths and ICT. English and Maths are offered up to Functional Skills Level 2, which is recognised as equivalent to a GCSE for employment purposes; Level 2 in Digital Skills is also offered.
SAFL offers interest courses in subjects such as sewing skills, painting and flower arranging as well as supporting schools and community groups with family learning. Residents can get comprehensive advice and guidance on careers, learning needs and job-related skills such as CV writing.
Courses are run from three main centres at Tipton College, Hateley Heath Family Education and Training Centre and the Ron Davis Centre in Smethwick which all have fully-equipped ICT suites.

She said: “I attended this course because I wanted to gain new skills and change my career path. Whilst on the course, I became more confident, gained loads of knowledge and I made progress towards the career path I want.
“In July last year, I started a new job as a healthcare assistant at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
“Attending the Health and Social Care course has made a huge difference in my life, as it gave me the strength and knowledge to follow my goals.
“I’ve also now completed English Level 2 and Maths Level 2 courses with SAFL and have enrolled on the Trainee Nurse Associate (TNA) programme at the hospital."
