In early 2022, Sandwell Council approved the Smethwick to Birmingham Corridor Framework document which concentrates on promoting opportunity sites within the regeneration corridor stretching from Galton Bridge in Smethwick to City Hospital in Birmingham.

The main aim of that document was to provide a vision and guiding principles for the area, setting a transport strategy and development strategy. This work also included preparation of the Grove Lane Masterplan which looked at that particular area in more detail.

Following on from that work, another key regeneration area within Smethwick is that around Rolfe Street.  Although the area is currently an area of employment uses, in the adopted Local Plan it has a long-term allocation for residential. The council has prepared a draft Rolfe Street Masterplan which covers the area from Smethwick Rolfe Street railway station to New Street and Bridge Street North to the east.

The Masterplan seeks to provide a clear direction for the future redevelopment of the area, concentrating on making this well-connected area an attractive, well designed and distinctive residential community, utilising its easily accessible public transport, nearby services and linking to the canal network.

Consultation on the Rolfe Street Masterplan was undertaken for six weeks from Monday 6 February 2023 to Monday 20 March 2023.

On 21 June 2023, the Masterplan was approved by Cabinet.
