Street Lighting Investement improvements programme 2023/24

As a responsible local Highway Authority, Sandwell MBC provides and maintains more than 30,900 streetlights on the adopted highway.

Of the total 30,900 Council streetlight assets approximately 75% have already been modernised to LED through a replacement programme, delivering significant efficiencies and carbon reduction benefits.

The priority objectives for Sandwell for 2023/24, in relation to street lighting includes the replacement of over 6,600 SON low pressure sodium lanterns with efficient LED lighting controlled by a CMS management system for enhanced energy savings.

The principle benefits from this work are:

1. A reduction of 758 tonnes of CO2 emitted each year,
2. Reduced electricity consumption from street lighting,
3. Reduced associated energy costs estimated at £332,619 per year as well as minimising the exposure to future energy price increases,

Visual inspections of all 6,600 lighting units will commence in June 2023 to ensure that the structural integrity and asset condition are maintained in accordance with the Well-Maintained Highways Code of Practice and guidance note GN22 for street lighting infrastructure management.

The Street Lighting lantern conversions themselves will commence in August 2023 and be complete in May 2024.
