We want your views
We are excited to announce a new programme of cycling and walking schemes to be delivered in Sandwell, The Black Country and the West Midlands region. All consultations on these schemes will be posted on Sandwell Consultation Hub.
Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs), as set out in the Government’s Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy, this is a new strategic approach to identifying cycling and walking improvements required at the local level. Sandwell Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (SCWIP) was adopted in January 2020 to prioritise a programme of infrastructure improvements for future investment. The West Midlands LCWIP was adopted in 2018 and the Black Country LCWIP will go out to public consultation in Spring 2024.
Walking to improve your health and fitness
Health benefits of cycling and walking
Sandwell Stride is a comprehensive programme of health walks, lead by trained walk leaders. People can walk in safety and improve their health. Walks take place every week throughout the year and make the most of the green spaces, parks, canals and neighbourhoods all across Sandwell.
For many shorter journeys, walking can be the best way to get around. It's an underrated form of exercise but walking is ideal for people of all ages and fitness levels who want to be more active. It can help you to meet your recommended 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day. Plus, it's free.
Walking infrastructure
If you live or work near a canal in Sandwell, you'll now be able to enjoy a green, traffic-free route to school, work or the shops. Canal towpath improvements have been made possible thanks to funding from the Local Growth Fund ‘Managing Short Trips Programme’ and Levelling up Fund ‘Towns Fund’, which is delivered by Canals and Rivers Trust.

Improving walking in Sandwell
Walking routes also form part of Public Rights of Way and future route improvements are listed in the Rights of Way Improvements Plan.
Local Access Forums (LAFs) were established after the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 introduced a requirement for all councils outside of London to set up a LAF.
