Types of abuse
Domestic abuse can take place in lots of different ways.
It can result in physical violence, but it can also be psychological abuse, emotional abuse, financial abuse, sexual abuse and controlling or coercive behaviour. It's not just physical abuse.
Examples of abuse
- Physical abuse: hitting, slapping, pulling hair, biting, kicking, throwing things.
- Sexual violence is any unwanted sexual act or activity.
- Forced marriage: forcing a person to marry someone when they do not want to.
- Psychological/emotional abuse: name calling, bullying, controlling what the other person does, reading their texts or logging on to their Facebook page, stalking or following them.
- Financial abuse: controlling or taking your money.

Are you a vulnerable adult or do you know a vulnerable adult who is being abused?
A vulnerable adult is someone who may be in need of help because of a disability or illness. It may be someone who is unable to take care of themselves or they may be someone who is unable to stop someone else from harming or taking advantage of them.
You should report any concerns about abuse straightaway.
