Archaeology
Sandwell's archaeological heritage is a vital component of the historic environment comprising many hundreds of sites, buildings and structures. All archaeological remains, whether structures, earthworks or buried deposits potentially hold the key to a better understanding of the borough's past. The presence of archaeology or the likelihood of it being found is a material planning consideration.
Scheduled monuments
Scheduled monuments are sites or structures designated and protected by Historic England. There are seven in Sandwell. Consent is required from Historic England for works to scheduled monuments.
You can search for scheduled monuments on the Historic England website.
Historic Environment Record (HER)
The Sandwell HER is a computerised, map based, index record of all known heritage assets in the borough. Applicants for planning permission or listed building consent may be required to provide a Statement of Heritage Significance and will be expected to have consulted the council's HER. You can access the Sandwell HER by contacting the Conservation Officer who will answer simple queries straight away. In the case of complex commercial queries, where the response requires a substantial allocation of staff resources, the information will be provided within 7 working days.
