Decant FAQs
What is a decant? A decant is a temporary move to alternative accommodation whilst work is carried out at an uninhabitable property.
Do I have to move out whilst work is being completed? Your Officer will discuss the work that is required with you and confirm whether you need to move out or if it is safe for you to remain in the property whilst the work is completed.
Where will I be moved to? Your Officer will discuss suitable accommodation options with you. This could be a council property, temporary accommodation or a hotel. You can also decide to stay with family or friends if this would be your preference.
Is there help with moving? Yes, if required we will arrange for the removal of your belongings to the temporary accommodation and back again when you return. We can also arrange disconnection and reconnection of appliances if necessary.
Will I have to pay rent and Council Tax on both properties? No, you will not have to pay rent and Council Tax on both properties. You will be responsible for the charges for the temporary accommodation until you move back.
Can I leave my belongings in the property whilst works are being carried out? All personal belongings must be removed from the property and either taken with you or placed in storage.
How long will I have to stay in temporary accommodation? You will need to stay in temporary accommodation until the agreed works have been completed, your Officer will advise you of expected timescales and keep you informed of any changes.
